Staying True to My Ethos: A Tutor's Manifesto for Authentic Education in Music Schools

Music education has the power to transform lives, yet many music schools today focus more on expansion and profit than on the core values that make teaching meaningful. As a tutor, I have witnessed this shift firsthand. It often leads to a loss of connection with students and a dilution of what makes music education truly special. This manifesto is my commitment to staying grounded in my principles, ensuring that every lesson I give honors the art, the student, and the joy of learning.

Why Staying True Matters in Music Education

Many music schools chase growth by increasing class sizes, cutting lesson times, or pushing standardised curricula. These changes may boost numbers but often sacrifice the personal touch and deep engagement that inspire students. To me, authentic education means:

Prioritising individual student needs over rigid schedules
Fostering creativity and expression rather than rote learning
Building trust and respect between tutor and student, and parents too

When schools lose sight of these values, students may feel like just another number, and parents may feel like they are losing a community. I refuse to let that happen in my teaching.

My Core Beliefs as a Tutor

Respect for Each Student’s Unique Path

Every student arrives with different goals, backgrounds, and learning styles. I tailor lessons to fit their pace and interests. For example, one student might thrive exploring jazz improvisation, while another prefers classical technique. Recognising this diversity keeps lessons engaging and relevant.

Commitment to Musical Integrity

Music is an art form that deserves respect. I emphasise understanding the history, theory, and emotion behind pieces, not just playing notes correctly. This approach helps students connect deeply with their music and develop lifelong appreciation.

Encouraging Curiosity and Exploration

I create a safe space where students feel free to experiment and make mistakes. This mindset builds confidence and nurtures creativity. For instance, I don't discourage 'noodling', and I don't talk harshly to anyone who makes mistakes.

Policies That Reflect My Ethos

Individualized Learning Experience

Lessons are 1:1, and I won't be taking any groups. Ever. Every one learns differently and someone always loses out on the support they need in group lessons.

Transparent Communication

I keep open lines of communication with students and parents. Regular progress updates and honest feedback help everyone stay aligned on goals and challenges. This transparency builds trust and accountability. I take on feedback on how to better my notes for each indivudual student.

Fair Pricing and Accessibility

Music education should be accessible. I offer fair pricing and help to apply for funding to support students who might otherwise miss out. This policy reflects my belief that passion and talent should not be limited by financial barriers. I will not increase my prices more than once per year, and I will review this every March. I aim to never increase my prices by more than £3 per month.

Practical Examples of Staying True

Custom Lesson Plans: Everyone comes through the door with different goals, I steer lessons to suit who is sat infront of me.
Community Engagement: I organise informal recitals where students perform for family and friends, creating a supportive environment that celebrates progress over perfection. I will allow for time at these events for students to chat and make friends.
Continuous Learning: I invest time in my own development, I update my safeguarding training yearly and spend time learning new teaching methods to better serve my students.

The Impact of Authentic Tutoring

Students taught with respect and care often show remarkable growth. They develop not only technical skills but also confidence, discipline, and a genuine love for music. Parents frequently share stories of how lessons have boosted their child’s self-esteem and creativity.

By staying true to my ethos, I create a space where music education is more than a service—it becomes a meaningful experience that shapes lives.

Music education should never be just about numbers or business goals. It is about connection, growth, and passion. This manifesto is my promise to uphold those values every day. I hope that my students and their parents would hold me acountable should I ever start to let standards slip.
